Jarvis lay in the critical care area on life support. Stone had beat Jarvis into a coma. I was questioned by the hospital nurses about Jarvis’s beating and I told them that I came home to find him in that condition. One of the nurses wanted to call the police.

“If you call the police you put me and my son in danger.” I stepped to her and said. “Please keep this between us. For now. Give him a chance to get well and he’ll deal with this with the authorities.”

“What kind of danger?” she inquired not caring about my pleas.

I was not up for her questioning right now.

“Just mind your fuckin’ business. No fuckin’ police! Okay?!” I snapped.

“Your funeral,” She said as she walked away.

Later, the doctor gave me his prognosis. Jarvis suffered a pleural infusion which was a collapsed lung, several broken ribs, a broken wrist, some internal bleeding that had to be stopped, some swelling on the brain and multiple contusions.

Reds held me in her arms and we both cried as the doctor told us that Jarvis was barely alive and that the next forty-eight hours would be critical as Jarvis would hang between life and death.

Through it all she was as distraught as me, go figure.
